What you need to know about AHA
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are commonly used in skincare products, especially in anti-aging treatment. The products may vary from serum, toner to creams. There are seven common AHAs you can find in skincare products label, such as:
- Glycolic acid
- Citric acid
- Lactic acid
- Hydroxycaproic acid
- Hydroxycaprylic acid
- Malic acid
- Tartaric acid
Among those seven common AHAs, glycolic acids and lactic acids appear to be the most effective and promising ingredients. They are likely to irritate the skin. AHAs are primarily used for hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, fine line and wrinkles, and also uneven skin tone. The idea of AHA itself is to exfoliate the skin.
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells and accelerating skin renewal. As we age, there is the deceleration of skin cell cycles. This will result in dead skin cells building up and leaving your skin dull. In addition, it will also lead to wrinkles, fine lines, and acne. The process will bring back your skin elasticity.
AHA serum product is designed to speed up our skin metabolism and treat skin issues, like enlarged pores. This is needed for exfoliating and smoothing skin. It slows down the melanin deposit, so the skin will be brighter. Moreover, it is formulated to nourish and hydrate the skin.
Cleanse your face and pat it dry gently with a clean cloth. Then, apply 2-3 drops of AHA serum to your face. Use it 2-3 times a week and if you find your skin is okay with it, you can start using it daily. However, if you experience redness or breakouts on your face, you should reduce the frequency of usage. Evaluate to know whether the serum is suitable for your skin or not. After that, apply moisturizer. Be careful not to have direct contact with your eyes.
You also have to read carefully the label of AHA serum to find the concentration. Highly-concentration AHA increases your skin sensitivity to UV rays. That’s why you should never forget to wear sunscreen daily and reapply if it is needed.
